Welsh Area Championships December 2018

Christmas came early for Team JSTKD as they collected an impressive haul of medals at the TAGB Welsh Area Championships this month.

Team JSTKD had a mixture of regulars and first-timers taking part: Zak, Lucy and Joe Grinter, Menna and Harri Burmingham, Alex Munn, Rhys Doel, Harry Thomas, Alisha Roberts, Dylan Howe, Tal Skone, Sean Murphy, Grace Waters, William Yanez, Finlay Valvo, Darcy Griffin, Aimee Henessey, Brenig Preest and Phillip Jelf.

It didn’t take long for the individual sparring medals to start arriving with great comeback performances from two of our Black Belts.  Following an absence due to an injury, Rhys was back in action and in fine form as he took a bronze whilst there was an amazing comeback of a different sort from Harri who got knocked out (literally) in the quarter finals but picked himself up to go on to the semi’s where he too took a bronze.  We had more medals from two of our first time adults in the green and yellow belts respectively with Brenig bagging a silver and Phillip taking a bronze.

Moving up a gear, we saw some outstanding performances from team members who went all the way to the finals and came away as tournament championsAlex dominated in the Boys Red Middleweight division and similarly, Zak took control in his first time fighting as a Red Lightweight.  More Lightweight success came for Harry making a fantastic debut in the Boys Green Belts whilst over in the Girls Green Belts, Lucy’s super fighting spirit paid dividends.  Zak and Lucy’s younger brother Joe also added another gold but this time in the Boys Tag Team event.

Special mentions are deserved for our other team members who, without exception, gave their all across the other divisions including Darcy who knocked out her opponent earlier in the rounds (Girls Black Belts) but eventually bowed out before the medal matches and there was a similar close call for a medal for Menna in the Black Belt Patterns.

The team will be taking a well-deserved break over the festive period but are now looking forward to further tournaments in the New Year.
